Known variously as the Alston House, the "Retreat", and the House in the Horseshoe, the house which stands within the grounds of the House in the Horseshoe North Carolina State Historic Site is a Revolutionary War era structure which has been preserved to mark the architecture of the period. This was the site of a 1781 skirmish between the forces of the Whig leader Philip Alston and Loyalists under David Fanning. Each year a group of reenactors meet to recreate the battle scene.
