Lord Cornwallis found scant welcome in Hillsborough, NC. In fact, while he was there, his men were attacked by local partisans at Hart's Mill. It was because of this skirmish that Cornwallis headed for the Haw River in Alamance County, NC. Just last year, a NC State Historical Marker was erected in Orange County, NC, on August 11, 2007, an effort that was spearheaded by Stewart Dunaway of Hillsborough, NC.
